The θ-Vacua and the Leutwyler–Smilga Scaling Regime

چکیده
The partition function of QCD is studied in the Leutwyler–Smilga scaling regime for an arbitrary number of quark flavors and masses including the contributions from all winding numbers. For Nf = 2 and degenerate quark masses, the partition function becomes independent of the quark masses at θ = π and subsequently the scalar chiral condensate vanishes. There is a discontinuity at θ = π in the first derivative of the energy density with respect to θ corresponding to the first–order phase transition in which CP is spontaneously broken, known as Dashen’s phenomena. These properties are found to be insensitive to both the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking and the representation of the quark fields.

QCD in a finite box: Numerical test studies in the three Leutwyler-Smilga regimes
The Leutwyler-Smilga prediction regarding the (ir)relevance of the global topological charge for QCD in a finite box is subject to a test. To this end the lattice version of a suitably chosen analogue (massive 2-flavour Schwinger model) is analyzed in the small (V Σm≪ 1), intermediate (V Σm ≃ 1) and large (V Σm≫ 1) Leutwyler-Smilga regimes. The predictions for the small and large regimes are co...
متن کاملPartition function zeros in QCD
The spectral correlations of the QCD Dirac operator in the 4-dimensional Euclidean box, 1/ΛQCD ≪ L ≪ 1/mπ, usually denoted as Leutwyler-Smilga regime [3], have been the object of intense study in recent years. They contain valuable information about the chiral properties of the QCD vacuum. Provided that chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, the above regime can be described either by an effe...
متن کاملQCD at θ ∼ π.
Taking into account the terms ∼ m 2 in the effective chiral lagrangian , we show that, at θ = π, the theory with 2 light quarks of equal mass involves two degenerate vacuum states separated by a barrier. For N f = 3, the energy barrier between two vacua appears already in the leading order in mass. This corresponds to the first order phase transition at θ = π. The surface energy density of the ...
متن کاملEffects of low-lying fermion modes in the ǫ-regime
We investigate the effects of low-lying fermion modes on the QCD partition function in the ǫ-regime. With the overlap Dirac operator we calculate several tens of low-lying fermion eigenvalues on the quenched lattice. By partially incorporating the fermion determinant through the truncated determinant approximation, we calculate the partition function and other related quantities for Nf = 1 and ...
متن کاملOverlap Dirac Operator, Eigenvalues and Random Matrix Theory
An important property of massless QCD is the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. The associated Goldstone pions dominate the low-energy, finite-volume scaling behavior of the Dirac operator spectrum in the microscopic regime, 1/ΛQCD << L << 1/mπ, with L the length of the system [1]. This behavior can be characterized by chiral random matrix theory (RMT). The RMT description of the lowenerg...
